Philosophy of Education

Students in the modern world possess unique needs and realities, and I sincerely believe that good teaching addresses this challenge in ways that are affirming and nurturing for every individual. Paulo Freire’s philosophy emphasizes that humans are motivated by a need to shape their experiences and engage in the process of becoming. As a music instructor, I strive to create learning communities that empower students in this process. I believe a critical education should provide students with the skills and knowledge to become agents of positive change, and the music classroom should in no way be excluded from this important facet of education.

Through kindness, I work to create a culturally sustaining classroom where students feel seen and appreciated. This helps students be comfortable to take risks and focus on learning, but also models how to treat others empathetically. Authentic and honest relationships between myself, my students, parents, and colleagues are paramount to my success as a teacher and member of the community. I model my educational philosophy on a daily basis that treats the classroom as a living, learning community in which all voices are heard and valued.
